While startups were dealt a blow by the pandemic, their agility and skill helped the UAE respond effectively to the global health crisis. Majed Al Suwaidi, managing director of Dubai Media City and lead of in5, shares his views on navigating Dubai's next chapter of growth, and the role of innovation and entrepreneurship in building on the UAE's knowledge-based economy to create an ecosystem fit for the post-pandemic world.
Since the pandemic began, Saudi edtech Noon Academy has gone from strength to strength, with its continued expansion beyond the Mena region as well as its recent pre-Series B funding round. Wamda spoke with Mohammed Aldhalaan, CEO and co-founder of Noon Academy, about the state of the edtech sector, the short-and long-term impact of the pandemic, as well as the challenges facing the company.
Investments in fintech in Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) recorded $4.6 billion in the first half of 2020, while global fintech investments dipped to $25.6 billion. According to a report on global fintech investment trends from KPMG International, it is expected that the fintech market in the Middle East region will further expand and diversify for the foreseeable future.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, several startups in the Mena region had emerged digitising the carpooling system, aiming to transform the long- standing concept into a reliable, technology-based solution. While it is too soon to determine the future of ride-sharing in a post COVID-19 world, the current health and safety concerns surrounding car-sharing threaten the long-term commercial viability of the industry.
InstaShop was acquired by Germany's Delivery Hero last week in a deal worth $360 million and marked one of the largest exits in the region to date. This exit, like others before it, will have a ripple effect on the ecosystem likely to encourage more to embrace entrepreneurship and in InstaShop's case specifically, it highlights the growing potential of the e-grocery segment in the region.
The transport and logistics sector suffers from a lack of transparency, reliability and efficiency, and is in dire need of innovation and disruption. Janardan Dalmia, founder, and CEO of Trukkin, a Dubai-based truck aggregator connecting shippers, transporters, brokers, and drivers, outlines the company's experience during the pandemic and why he decided to expand to a new market during the lockdown.
