The future of agritech in Mena

Wamda hosted a panel discussion last week, to discuss the current state of the agritech sector in Mena, and shed light on the challenges that face the growth of such a critical sector and what can be done to make it lucrative for VC investments. Udrive, a UAE-based on-demand mobility startup founded in 2017 and the region's first on-demand car-sharing platform, is now looking to raise investment through crowdfunding. Hasib Khan, founder and CEO of Udrive, shares more on the company's journey from lockdown to breaking even.

What has become clear to many of Mena's corporates in a post-Covid world, is that they did not have, and in many cases still do not have sufficient exposure to the technology sector, leaving them vulnerable in the long run. And so, the corporates that once shunned startups are now increasingly looking to partner, acquire, or invest in them.

Mena startups raised $47.6 million in October

Investments rose more than 300% month-on-month with startups raising $47.6 million in October. This was mostly down to the large rounds from Sweetheart Kitchen and Foxpush which together raised $32.7 million.

Open banking has progressed in two ways around the world: regulations that have forced the traditional banks to embrace it and work with fintech startups, or the fear of falling behind in the technological race to innovation.
