35 percent of young people in the Arab world use Facebook as their main daily news source.
According to ASDA'A Burson-Marsteller's latest survey on Arab youth, Instagram and Twitter have witnessed an increase in daily use, with the latter being viewed daily by 37 percent of the region's youth - however, it is WhatsApp that could easily become the region's de facto communications platform.

Fear of unemployment
If optimism among the youth is waning, it is also because unemployment still tops the list of concerns among youth across the region, with a few outside the GCC thinking their country's education system prepares them for the jobs of the future.

What does the next big innovation out of MENA look like?
At our Annual LP Meeting last month, we put the spotlight on verticals showing good promise in the region. "The next wave is going to be about businesses targeting particularly local problems, as more people go online.", says managing partner Khaled Talhouni.

One example of this lies in fintech; the region is largely unbanked and suffers the largest funding gap per capita globally (at over $350B). In addition to that, it is also the second largest remittance corridor.

In this particular vertical, the opportunity lies in leapfrogging existing infrastructure and eliminating middlemen (think Bitcoin, marketplace lending, tech enabled credit rating, and more). More in our report on Fintech in MENA, published in partnership with PayFort.
