The digitisation that analysts expected would take anywhere between two to five years to transform our economies, happened in the space of a few months as a result of the Coronavirus. 2021 is expected to bring more uncertainty, more innovations, and more startups proving the value of the entrepreneurship sector. We outline the trends we expect to see in 2021.

Investments in Mena: December 2020

Last year was meant to be the year that startups in Mena broke the billion dollar investment mark, but the pandemic put to rest that milestone. The damage that the Coronavirus wrought only resulted in a 7 per cent year-on-year decline, with Mena startups raising $654 million in total across 363 deals.

Khurram Shroff, chairman of UAE-based private equity firm IBC Group which holds a million Bitcoins, explains why cryptocurrencies are emerging as 'digital gold', and governments, which previously regarded crypto as a bubble waiting to burst, are now hedging in an asset class whose time seems to have come.
