Online food delivery: The disruption heading to destruction

As delivery services take up contactless drop-offs, a growing number of regional merchants are now encouraging digital payments and challenging consumers' once-preferred cash on delivery (COD) payment method in Mena. We spoke with Gaurang Shah, senior vice president of digital payments & labs, Mastercard MEA, about the trends that have emerged in the contactless payments space.

Uber Eats has announced its exit from the region this week, signifying defeat in the face of one of the most competitive sectors in technology - online food delivery. Although food delivery aggregators, with a lower customer acquisition cost, remain dominant for now, the landscape could change as restaurants come together against the conditions imposed by the aggregators in Mena.

Spandana Palaypu, founder of ZoEasy, the UAE's first online platform which matches employers with their ideal domestic and blue collar workers, aspires to find a solution to unethical recruitment agencies that often lure blue-collar staff to the Gulf with false promises about wages and working conditions. We spoke with Palaypu about her journey and plans.

Wamda successfully graduated its second cohort of the Wamda X programme with 15 startups that pitched to the wider investor community in an online event on 29 and 30 April. The startups presented solutions across industries such as foodtech, sportstech, Software as a Service (SaaS) and financial technology (fintech) among others, with substantial representation from across the region.
