Cloud kitchens, foodtech’s latest hype

Cloud kitchens have taken the traditional commercial kitchen from a real estate play to one infused with technology. In doing so, several different types of cloud kitchens have emerged. In the first part of our deep dive into cloud kitchens, we look at the different business models and why the UAE has emerged as a global hotspot for the sector.

Cloud kitchens operating in the GCC

The cloud kitchen space has grown substantially in the GCC over the past couple of years, with several business models emerging.

Wamda mapped some of the key players in the space to include virtual restaurants, virtual brands, kitchen-as-a-service (KaaS), as well as the full-stack model across Mena's leading markets.

The second cohort of Wamda X was launched in January this year, and a few months into the programme, lockdown measures were enacted in the UAE and plans had to change. In this podcast, we speak with Wamda X's Annelies Docx and two of the startups that graduated to discover what happens when things don't go according to plan.

The coronavirus is reconfiguring global status and rankings and, the fight against it has led advanced economies looking to smaller nations for lessons in effective e-government. But if there is one lesson to be learned from this pandemic, it is the need to invest locally and invest heavily in research and development (R&D).
