Mena's entrepreneurs have turned to hackathons to showcase their technological capabilities to the rest of the world and get a level of recognition that would otherwise be difficult for them to achieve without a significant marketing budget and access to mentorship from global tech companies. Could hackathons give Mena's tech innovators accessibility to the global platform?
In April, Alexandria Angels launched a $6.3 million fund to support the Egyptian technology ecosystem with the objective of bridging the existing funding gap for startups at the early-stages. We spoke with Tarek El Kady, co-founder of Med Angels and Alex Angels about the recently-launched fund, who it is targeting, and his views on the state of angel investment in the region.
This pandemic is proving to be a catalyst for entrepreneurship and students eager to tackle some of society's most pressing problems. As more graduates venture into the startup world ahead of pursuing traditional employment, universities look to creating joint ventures between students, researchers, and industry players to promote research commercialisation.
