Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, several startups in the Mena region had emerged digitising the carpooling system, aiming to transform the long- standing concept into a reliable, technology-based solution. While it is too soon to determine the future of ride-sharing in a post COVID-19 world, the current health and safety concerns surrounding car-sharing threaten the long-term commercial viability of the industry.
InstaShop was acquired by Germany's Delivery Hero last week in a deal worth $360 million and marked one of the largest exits in the region to date. This exit, like others before it, will have a ripple effect on the ecosystem likely to encourage more to embrace entrepreneurship and in InstaShop's case specifically, it highlights the growing potential of the e-grocery segment in the region.
The transport and logistics sector suffers from a lack of transparency, reliability and efficiency, and is in dire need of innovation and disruption. Janardan Dalmia, founder, and CEO of Trukkin, a Dubai-based truck aggregator connecting shippers, transporters, brokers, and drivers, outlines the company's experience during the pandemic and why he decided to expand to a new market during the lockdown.
